Environment

Tomkins is committed to conducting its business with respect for the environment. All of our operating companies have a responsibility to comply strictly with applicable environmental legislation. In addition, we develop and implement action plans with the objective of achieving continuous improvement in environmental performance, which is systematically reviewed and monitored by management. Broadly, our environmental initiatives focus on minimising waste generation and preventing pollution, reducing energy consumption and procuring raw materials from sustainable sources.

Our efforts are not limited to minimising the impact of our operations on the environment but also extend to manufacturing environmentally responsible products. Our product line includes environmentally sound and energy efficient air systems as well as industrial and automotive products and systems that address safety, reduce fuel consumption, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Environmental policy

Our environmental policy forms part of our wider HSE policy and is available in several languages including English, Chinese, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Spanish, and Thai.

Management processes and systems

Tomkins actively manages the environmental impact of all its operating sites. Each of our manufacturing and distribution facilities is required to adopt an Environmental Management System (‘EMS') to manage their environmental performance. ISO 14001 accreditation is also encouraged. ISO certification signifies that these facilities have an internationally accredited EMS in place to identify and minimise the environmental impacts of the business. Certification also indicates that the plants have established a certified environmental continuous improvement programme. Currently, 118 of the Group's manufacturing and distribution facilities have adopted an Environmental Management System. Of the 118 facilities, 69 have achieved ISO 14001 accreditation.

As our environmental policy forms part of our wider HSE policy, a description of how it is implemented and monitored is available in the section on Management processes and systems within Our Workplace - Health & Safety.

Performance record

Our facilities began reporting energy and water usage, air emissions, waste and recycling efforts in 2007. We have found this data allows our companies to better manage their businesses and we have seen a corresponding improvement in our environmental performance as evidenced by our key performance indicators. In the table below, we have set out absolute figures for waste production, energy and water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions for 2008 and 2007. Although this data does not cover 100% of our operations, we believe it provides a meaningful guide as to the impact of our operations.
